Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

  • AMP - He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

Washing

G3067 - λουτρόν loutrón, loo-tron'; from G3068; a bath, i.e. (figuratively), baptism:—washing.

G3068 - λούω loúō, loo'-o; a primary verb; to bathe (the whole person; whereas G3538 means to wet a part only, and G4150 to wash, cleanse garments exclusively):—wash.

G3538 - νίπτω níptō, nip'-to; to cleanse (especially the hands or the feet or the face); ceremonially, to perform ablution:—wash. Compare G3068.

G4150 - πλύνω plýnō, ploo'-no; a prolonged form of an obsolete πλύω plýō (to "flow"); to "plunge", i.e. launder clothing:—wash. Compare G3068, G3538.

G3824 - παλιγγενεσία paliggenesía, pal-ing-ghen-es-ee'-ah; from G3825 and G1078; (spiritual) rebirth (the state or the act), i.e. (figuratively) spiritual renovation; specially, Messianic restoration:—regeneration.

G3825 - πάλιν pálin, pal'-in; probably from the same as G3823 (through the idea of oscillatory repetition); (adverbially) anew, i.e. (of place) back, (of time) once more, or (conjunctionally) furthermore or on the other hand:—again.

  • Define oscillate - to swing backward and forward like a pendulum. i.e. it is the repetitive or periodic variation, typically in time, of some measure about a central value or between two or more different states/conditions. Example Water changing between liquid and frozen stages in response to temperature change over time.

G3823 - πάλη pálē, pal'-ay; from πάλλω pállō (to vibrate; another form for G906); wrestling:—+ wrestle.

G906 - †βάλλω bállō, bal'-lo; a primary verb; to throw (in various applications, more or less violent or intense):—arise, cast (out), × dung, lay, lie, pour, put (up), send, strike, throw (down), thrust. Compare G4496.

G4496 - ῥίπτω rhíptō, hrip'-to; a primary verb (perhaps rather akin to the base of G4474, through the idea of sudden motion); to fling (properly, with a quick toss, thus differing from G906, which denotes a deliberate hurl; and from τείνω teínō (see in G1614), which indicates an extended projection); by qualification, to deposit (as if a load); by extension, to disperse:—cast (down, out), scatter abroad, throw.

First impression

I notice the following:

  1. Differentiation between garments/clothing and people
  2. When referring to "people", there are various possibilities:
    1. figuratively, and in this case it refers to "baptism"
    2. to bathe, in this case there is distinction between G3068 (whole person) and G3538 (hands/feet/face). The G3538 however also has a "ceremonial" connotation

Practical examples

G3067 examples

Eph 5:26-27 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

  • This section refers to the task men take up in their role as Husbands. Paul describes what it means to "love their wives", the objective of sanctifying and cleansing something for the glorious presentation thereof to yourself, having no spot, wrinkle, completely without blemish. How is that achieved?
    • Wives are instructed to submit to their husbands (Eph5:24)
    • Husbands are to give themselves up for their Wives, pay the highest price just as Messiah also gave himself (Eph5:25)

G3824 examples

Tit 3:5 - "washing of regeneration". Here "regeneration" is more like "renovation.

Regeneration
