What is the difference?

Psalm 92:6 A brutish בער H1198 man knoweth not; neither doth a fool נבל H3684 understand this.

Psalm 94:8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and [ye] fools, when will ye be wise?

The difference here is extremely important, since the intention or rationale for the behaviour of each is fundamentally different.

  1. The brutish ones acts the way they do because they simply don't know, they are acting out of ignorance (i.e. due to lack of knowledge).
  2. The fool is completely different, they act the way they due because of lack of understanding, which implies that they do know, they just choose not to study the matter diliently enough to gain proper understanding. They thus act out of arrogance.

Proverbs 1:22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools נבל H3684 hate knowledge?

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Job 5:2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

Job 5:2 Einen Toren aber erwürgt wohl der Unmut, und den Unverständigen tötet der Eifer.
