Exo23:10-12 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof. But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.

Characteristics of the Sabbath

Sabbath Blessing

Gen2:2-3 And on the seventh day Eloheem ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And Eloheem blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which Eloheem created and made.

What exactly is this special blessing/sanctification which Eloheem made upon the sabbath which was not applied to any other day? Surely the other days are also blessed in one or another way, various creations were done on those days, however only the Sabbath was blessed and sanctified. What does that mean and how does it effect us today?

Holy status

Exo20:9-11 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

A Sign

Exo31:12-18 And the Yahuah spake unto Moses, saying, Speak thou also unto the children of Yashrael, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Yahuah that doth sanctify you. e shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to Yahuah: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Yahsharel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Yahshrael for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

So we have first of all a covenant and a sign. Just like the covenant with Noah, this sign of the Sabbath is between Yahuah and his elect Yahshrael, in all their generations. It is a sign according to which Yahshrael can be identified.

Application of the Sabbath

Exo16:23-30 And he said unto them, This is that which the Yahuah hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto Yahuah: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein. And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto Yahuah: to day ye shall not find it in the field. Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none. And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the Yahuah said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for that the Yahuah hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day.

What is the situation here? The elect were lead out of Egypt and find themselves in the desert where Yahuah provides them with manna. Moses teaches that they are to collect a double portion on the sixth day. That they are to prepare for the seventh. Yet, on the seventh day, there is still some that go out to collect, yet they find nothing. Yahuah questions - how long refuse ye to keep my commandments?

The point is that you are not supposed to cook, bake or prepare meals on the Sabbath, but are to do so on the sixth day in preparation of the Sabbath. Yahushua provides everyone with a double portion on the sixth day, enabling the observance of rest on the Sabbath.
